With half a year to go before the first batch of pilot projects is due to start production, the Yangkou Port Chemical Pilot Base, located in Yangkou Port Economic Development Zone, Rudong, Jiangsu province, has entered the final stage of preparation before full operations begin.

The base is positioned as a specialized incubator, aiming to break through key bottlenecks in the full-chain service that hinder the transition of scientific research achievements from the laboratory to the production line.

The base opened in May 2025 as one of the first chemical pilot bases in Jiangsu. It represents an investment of 350 million yuan ($48 million) and covers six hectares, with eight workshops, three warehouses and lab space.

Operated by Yangkou Port Construction and Development Group, NanoMicro, and Peking University Southern Jiangsu Research Institute, the base offers end-to-end services including process scale-up, safety assessment, and environmental compliance. It takes R&D from southern Jiangsu and provides space for pilot work and production, forming a cross-Yangtze innovation loop.

Six pilot projects have been secured, with nearly ten more under discussion.

Ma Shiyu, an official with the zone, said its supportive policies, strategic location, established industrial infrastructure and concentration of leading companies have made it an attractive location for businesses.
