Nantong has showcased its approach to culture-led urban renewal and community regeneration at events marking World Cities Day 2026, highlighting how the city is preserving its heritage while improving residents' quality of life.
Held in Fuzhou and Shanghai, the events brought together urban officials, representatives of international organizations and experts from China and abroad to discuss urban renewal and sustainable development.
At a mayoral forum on high-quality urban development in Fuzhou on Nov 1, Nantong shared its experience in integrating cultural heritage preservation into urban renewal.
The city outlined efforts to protect historic sites, vitalize industrial heritage and incorporate local cultural identity into the renovation of old neighborhoods and residential communities. Projects include vitalizing the Dasheng Cotton Mills in the Tangzha area, as well as upgrading historic blocks such as Dinggujiao and Bachang Street.
Nantong has also taken a comprehensive approach to vitalizing the area around the Haohe River, linking waterfront spaces, cultural attractions, and commercial activities to create a more vibrant urban destination.
Another local initiative gained international recognition on Nov 3, when the regeneration project in Nanchuanyuan residential community, Chongchuan district, was included in the Global Report on Sustainable Community Development: Practices and Applications 2026, supported by UN-Habitat.
Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, the project has repurposed underused spaces to provide neighborhood services, including elderly care, domestic services and community dining. It has also improved facilities for children and older residents, restored local waterways, and created public waterfront spaces.
The two initiatives demonstrate Nantong's efforts to balance heritage conservation, community needs and sustainable urban development, offering practical insights for cities seeking more inclusive and livable urban environments.
