A study tour of Nantong offers visitors a chance to explore the legacy of Zhang Jian (1853-1926), a pioneering industrialist and educator who helped shape modern China through industrial development, education and public welfare.
The route connects historic sites across the city and surrounding areas, turning Nantong's industrial heritage and cultural landmarks into an open-air classroom.
The journey begins in Tangzha Ancient Town, home to the Dasheng Cotton Mills, founded by Zhang in 1895 and a landmark in China's early national industry. Historic factory buildings and newly developed exhibition spaces tell the story of the mill and its role in Nantong's industrial growth.
At Nantong Museum, one of China's earliest public museums, visitors can explore local history through a blend of Chinese garden traditions and Western museum concepts. Haonan Villa, Zhang's former residence, offers further insight into his pursuit of national development.
The route also highlights Zhang's commitment to environmental conservation. Langshan Mountain National Forest Park, Junshan Mountain and Seyuan Garden showcase the region's natural landscapes and Zhang's efforts in forestry. A boat ride along the ancient Haohe River provides a different perspective on the city's historic institutions and cultural heritage.
Beyond downtown Nantong, the tour extends to Zhang's birthplace in Changle town, Haimen district, where his former residence, memorial hall and the Yisheng Distillery trace his life and entrepreneurial endeavors. The former Tonghai Reclamation Company site in Qidong, a county-level city of Nantong, illustrates his efforts to transform coastal salt marshes into productive farmland.
Together, these destinations offer an immersive look at Zhang's vision of using industry, education and environmental stewardship to build a more prosperous society.
