The Urban Intangible Cultural Heritage Salon in Nantong, Jiangsu province, is presenting its latest showcase with a Nantong banyao kite-making exhibition, running from June 18 to Dec 17 at Nantong Xingdong International Airport.

Situated in the domestic arrival corridor of the airport terminal, the exhibition uses illustrated panels to explore the historical significance of this craft and offers a detailed breakdown of its core techniques: binding, painting, carving, pasting, tying, and assembling. This provides a comprehensive view of the unique charm of the Nantong banyao kite.

Building on its appearance as a typical flat kite from South China, the Nantong banyao kite sets itself apart from its northern counterparts by producing a melodious sound when soaring high, thanks to the variously sized whistles adorning it.

In 2006, Nantong banyao kite-making techniques were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) item.

As a flagship cultural initiative by the Nantong Cultural Center, the Urban Intangible Cultural Heritage Salon is committed to bringing ICH out of traditional exhibition halls and into the everyday lives of residents.

The brand has established a presence in multiple locations. In the Wenfeng Plaza commercial area, it regularly hosts creative exhibitions and hands-on workshops focused on ICH. In Chengnan Biye and Linggong School, it offers cultural gatherings, in-depth experiences, and opera and lantern riddle garden parties, making it a favored cultural destination for young people. Additionally, it leverages Gengsu Theater to seamlessly integrate ICH displays with stage performances.
