Rudong's clean energy project hits milestone

The Guohua Rudong integrated project of photovoltaic power generation, energy storage systems, and hydrogen energy production, the largest of its kind in China, connected its 60 MW/120 MWh storage station to the grid on Oct 14.

With the photovoltaic power station and energy storage power station both in operation, only the green hydrogen production unit remains to be brought online before the entire project can begin integrated operations.

Located in Yudong reclamation area, Rudong, Jiangsu province, the project is a national wind-PV base and China's first demonstration project integrating power generation, hydrogen production and storage with coastal ecological governance. It includes 400 MW of PV, 60 MW/120 MWh of storage and a 1,500 Nm³/h hydrogen station.

The project's 400 MW PV station connected its first units to the grid early last year, with cumulative grid feed-in exceeding 750 million kWh so far, said Jiang Bin, the project head.

The storage station can provide about 120,000 kWh of peak-shaving power daily. Once the hydrogen station begins operating, the project will produce about 482 metric tons of high-purity green hydrogen annually.

As of now, Rudong's new energy capacity has exceeded 8.3 GW, with wind and solar power now the mainstay of the regional energy supply.
