The mid-stage assessment meeting for the China Hydrogen Economy Pilot Rugao Project was recently held in the Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone in Nantong, in East China's Jiangsu province, local media reported.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) – China Hydrogen Economy Pilot Rugao Project was officially launched in August 2016 in the city of Rugao, which is administered by the prefecture-level city of Nantong.

It had the goal of building a city powered by hydrogen and promoting clean-energy based solutions that could help mitigate climate change, while boosting local sustainable development.

During the meeting, project director Yang Fei reviewed the achievements made since the project was launched and the difficulties encountered.

The participants had an in-depth exchange on the development of the project and discussed the direction of subsequent adjustments and output targets.

Officials said that the hydrogen energy industry is a new sector which still needs long-term exploration and practice to realize the utilization and industrialization of hydrogen energy.

They said the establishment of hydrogen economy pilot cities is a feasible goal.

Since the launch of the project, Rugao has carried out research into the fields of hydrogen development roadmaps, hydrogen industry technical standards and more.

It has organized activities such as the International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Congress and the hydrogen fuel cell vehicles popular science tour, greatly improving the project's profile and general public awareness of hydrogen energy.
