Tongzhou boosts rural economy through modern agriculture
Tongzhou district in Nantong, Jiangsu province has been actively promoting modern agricultural systems and techniques in its villages to enhance the rural economy in recent years.
One notable example is Yijiayuan village in Liuqiao town, which boasts 6,400 mu (426.7 hectares) of arable land. In recent years, the village has been committed to land leveling and the construction of high-standard farmland. The comprehensive advancement of high-standard farmland has been included in the 2024 development plan.
In addition to establishing the Wengang agricultural cooperative, the village has also consolidated scattered land and leased it to large households. Currently, the village has eight large agricultural households, with the Nantong Baolyu vegetable planting agricultural cooperative recognized as a national demonstration cooperative.
As of now, the village has accumulated a total operating income of nearly 10 million yuan ($1.4 million), with a remarkable income of 832,000 yuan in 2022 alone. The average annual net income per farmer has reached 28,900 yuan.
Chengdong village in Tongzhou has also utilized 300 mu of idle land as a pilot project - the Yucheng agricultural cooperative. The cooperative is creating a base for planting flowers, fruits, and seedlings and is able to generate an annual net income of up to 200,000 yuan.
