Chongchuan firm develops heat-resistant quantum dot laser chips

Nantong Tri-color Integrated Optoelectronics Technology, based in Chongchuan district, is developing quantum dot laser chips that can operate at high temperatures without cooling equipment, for use in AI data centers and high-speed optical communications.

Traditional quantum well lasers degrade at high temperatures and require cooling systems, thereby increasing power consumption and costs. In contrast, the company's quantum dot lasers use nanoscale semiconductor structures as their gain medium, giving them better heat resistance, a lower threshold current and stronger resistance to optical feedback.

The company is focusing on developing laser chips for 1.6T optical modules. These chips can operate at 85 degrees Celsius, deliver 300 milliwatts of output power and do not require an optical isolator. It has built a self-contained technology chain spanning materials, equipment and tape-out.

A single laser bar holds 25 laser chips arranged in a row, each just several hundred microns across and narrower than a needle tip. Making a finished chip requires more than 100 precision steps, from epitaxial growth to packaging. These chips serve as core light sources in photonic devices and other applications. Its products are used in data communications, intelligent driving and healthcare.
