The Mingxing community of the Chongchuan Economic Development Zone, Nantong has been acting to protect the rivers in its administrative area by reducing pollution, dredging the banks and retrofitting drainage pipes.

There are six rivers in the Mingxing community and two residential areas are built along them; thus their conditions are closely related to people nearby.

The Mingxing community has focused on pollution control of the Pugang River. Since 2019, it has made continuous efforts to dredge the rivers, forbid private sewage pipes, and retrofitted drainage pipes that were mixing rainwater and sewage on the south side of the community.

In early 2020, the community began to plan the reconstruction of drainage pipes in the Minxin Garden residential area. It carried out centralized reconstruction in July to solve old problems in the area such as mixed rainwater and sewage discharge and aging water pipes.

The community also renovated fences on the west side of Minxin Garden in 2019 and went on this year to demolish illegal buildings on the riverbanks. Volunteers have also promoted environmental protection regularly along the rivers to raise the awareness of local residents.

The temporary dam built for landscape projects at the beginning of the year was not removed because of the rainy season, which led to a drop in water quality due to the blockage of water and spreading of algae.

The community also worked with other units in the district to carry out manual weeding and dam slope removal, working overtime to complete river dredging and spraying work.

The Party committee of the Mingxing community will continue to cooperate with other units to control pollution at the source, dredge the river channel, and beautify the riverbank, not forgetting to mobilize the residents to take an active role in river protection.
