Rugao, a county-level city in Nantong, has made remarkable strides in the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In 2023, the city cultivated 284 hectares of various medicinal plants, including pinellia, loofah sponge, plantain herb, and mugwort.
Pingyuanchi village in Rugao boasts 73.3 hectares of lotus ponds, with lotus leaves, seeds, and roots all offering medicinal value. The alkaloids in lotus leaves are known for their weight loss benefits and have become a popular choice among those seeking to shed pounds.
Last year, Rugao Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine produced a series of 12 educational videos on Chinese herbal medicine. The hospital's compilation Illustrated Guide to Common Chinese Herbal Medicines in Rugao is set to be published soon as well. These initiatives are making significant contributions to the development of TCM throughout the city.
