With sweetly scented osmanthus blooming and golden gingko leaves decorating the banks of the ancient moat, now is one of the best times to explore the 1,600-year-old Rugao city in Nantong.
Over the past few years, the city has made significant progress in shifting its focus from developing tourist scenic spots, hotels and restaurants, to boosting "all-for-one" tourism to upgrade its tourism sector and satisfy people's diverse tourism demands.
In 2020, Rugao received 14.06 million tourists and generated a tourism revenue of 13.5 billion yuan ($2.11 billion). The figures were 97 percent and 76 percent higher than the previous year.
In addition, the city had last year become the only provincial-level demonstration zone for "all-for-one" tourism in Nantong. Two of its scenic areas were also upgraded to national 4A- and 3A-level tourist attractions.
Behind this success were the local government's efforts of upgrading infrastructure and facilities at scenic areas, integrating tourism resources, and introducing distinctive travel routes that combine natural scenery with local culture and cuisines.
Known as the "city of longevity" in China, Rugao has enticed numerous tourists to visit the local longevity park, which features a huge statue of Shou Xing, the Chinese God of Longevity, and the world's biggest bronze bowl that has 10,000 inscriptions of the Chinese character "寿" (longevity) in distinct styles.
Along with the park, the city's longevity culture and unique diet have also become popular among tourists, making a name for itself as a "blessed land for keeping wellness".
