With the COVID-19 pandemic now largely under control, the commerce department of Tongzhou district – administered by Nantong in East China's Jiangsu province – rolled out incentives to boost the stable growth of the consumer market during the recent May Day holiday from May 1 to 5.
During the holiday, the consumer market in Tongzhou showed strong signs of recovery, especially in terms of accommodation and catering.
According to statistics, Beishan Hotel and Grand Metropark Hotel Nantong achieved remarkable growth over the holiday. The two hotels brought in 3.3 million yuan ($515,393) from catering services, a year-on-year increase of 216 percent, and 553,000 yuan from accommodations, up 254 percent.
The department in charge of market operations and consumption promotion – under the district's commerce bureau – chose to look at the performance of the top seven shopping malls and supermarkets in terms of sales volume. The sales of said enterprises totaled 46.9 million yuan during the holiday, among which Wanda Plaza achieved a turnover of 30 million yuan, up 69 percent.
Relying on various business formats, Wanda Plaza was able to attract huge amounts of customers. On May 1, the plaza received 77,000 visitors and achieved sales of 6.48 million yuan, both record highs for the company.
Tongzhou district achieved significant growth in consumer spending over last year's May Day Holiday, revealing the ongoing vitality of its consumer market.
