Embroidery works using the style developed by Suzhou embroidery master Shen Shou (1874-1921) are currently on display at the art museum of Chongchuan district in Nantong. The exhibition will run until Oct 20.

The exhibition was hosted by the district's culture and tourism bureau and aims to teach more people about Nantong's national intangible cultural heritage items.

Shen served as the headmaster and teacher at China's first embroidery school, which was founded in Nantong in 1914 by Zhang Jian, a famous modern local industrialist and renowned academic.

Shen then developed her own embroidery style, which was named Shen Xiu (Shen's embroidery) by later generations. 

The embroidery technique was included in the second list of national-level intangible cultural heritage items in 2008.

The ongoing exhibition mainly showcases the integration of western painting technique and traditional Chinese embroidery art.
