Work began on June 11 to increase the power capacity of the Sanguandian transformer substation in Tongzhou district, Nantong, whose capacity up to 500 kilovolts. This is the first expansion since the station was put into operation in 2003.

The substation is the first of its kind in Nantong to reach the 500-kV milestone and plays a significant role in the city's 220-kV power network.

The capacity of the two main transformers is expected be increased from 750,000 kilowatts to 1 million kw. New integrated transformers will be adopted, which take up 37.7 percent less space than the previous transformers.

The transformers will help reduce the chance of power failure, improve the maintenance efficiency and enhance the power supply reliability of the 500-kV power network.

Due to rapid economic development, the maximum electrical power capacity in Nantong is predicted to reach a record high this summer of 8.8 million kw. The extension of the transformer substation will relieve the current power shortage.
