Research center for Nantong furniture established in Gangzha
A national-level research center for Nantong furniture was established in Gangzha district, Nantong on May 22 in order to preserve traditional furniture-making techniques.
Nantong furniture is made of unique timber that grows mainly in the region. The timber is sturdy and of high quality, allowing furniture made with it to be passed down over generations.
In an effort to preserve traditional techniques, Wang Jinxiang and Chen Yun, a local couple, established a museum showcasing over 300 pieces of Nantong furniture and tools in 2009.
The new research center is also expected to help preserve the traditional furniture-making techniques and get more people, especially young people, interested in the techniques.
