Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, originated in Hawaii in 1998 and is often considered as the safest extreme sport. It is a water sport that integrates stunt kites, sailboards, and surfing.

The competition was first held in 2013 and has become increasingly popular. Qidong's kitesurfing training center has also been brought up to international standards.
