Rugao's locally grown myoga ginger is entering its peak harvest season, bringing the crisp, aromatic seasonal vegetable to market.

In Xiayuan town, farmers have developed an innovative intercropping model that pairs myoga ginger with sponge gourds. Taking advantage of myoga's preference for shade, the climbing sponge gourd vines form a natural canopy overhead, while the myoga grows close to the ground, making efficient use of the same plot of land. The approach delivers two harvests from one field while improving both crop quality and land efficiency.

Once highly perishable and difficult to transport, myoga ginger was traditionally sold mainly in nearby markets. E-commerce is now helping change that. With online sales opening access to consumers far beyond the region, this seasonal local specialty is finding its way onto dining tables across China.
