Luis, a 65-year-old man from Portugal, has become an internet sensation after he was spotted buying shaobing (a type of Chinese pastry) in fluent Chinese in Haimen district, Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province.

This is Luis's fourth visit to China. Recently retired, he plans to spend three months here. He and his son Arthur, who has lived in Haimen for eight years, document the authentic local cuisine and daily life in the streets and alleys of Haimen, capturing the vibrant local life in their videos, which have touched many viewers.

Initially, Luis was worried about his son living in a foreign country. Still, after his first visit to Haimen in 2018, the convenient transportation, friendly locals and comfortable pace of life alleviated all his concerns.

"The lifestyle here is incredibly comfortable, it feels more like a home where you can truly settle down," Luis said, adding that he finds the food, especially the shaobing, particularly unforgettable.

And his son Arthur's emotional connection with Haimen began after a visit to the Jiangsu Jianghai Museum. The stories behind artifacts related to Zhang Jian, a renowned Chinese industrialist from Haimen, fascinated him and inspired him to introduce the cultural depth of Haimen to a broader audience.

"I will visit Haimen frequently. It makes me feel very safe and warm, and I am proud that my son has found his passion and a sense of belonging here," Luis said.
