Yangkou Port boosts prosperity of Rudong village
In Sanmin village, Changsha town, Rudong county, the winds of change have swept through this once quaint settlement of fishermen, salt workers, and farmers. The catalyst for this transformation was the development of Yangkou Port, which required the villagers to relinquish their coastal lands and in return has increased their prosperity.
Many of the fishermen in the community diversified their livelihoods, taking on responsibilities such as surveying for the construction of artificial Yangguang Island. One such individual is Xu Jianquan, who later invested in tugboats and engineering vessels and ventured into lucrative businesses like offshore wind turbine installation and offshore wind farm maintenance.
The development of Yangkou Port attracted numerous major projects, thus allowing residents to work close to their homes.
Catering to the elderly, particularly those who require assisted living, efforts have been made to provide secure accommodations in the Changsha Elder Care Center. In 2022, this facility was upgraded to 193 beds. According to Cao Weimin, director of the center, weekly activities such as movie nights and handicraft sessions are organized, while monthly birthday celebrations also bring joy and connection to the residents.
The Yangkou Port Experimental School is a modern institution built in 2017, designed to serve the needs of the newly developed city. It became Rudong's first nine-year comprehensive school, enrolling over 1,700 students, 30 percent of whom are the children of migrant workers employed by local businesses.
Principal Huang Junjun said: "The development of Yangkou Port has had a profound impact on our school. We are committed to providing support for the employees of local businesses."
