Under close monitoring and on-site supervision by staff from the Nantong Maritime Safety Administration, chemicals tanker MT ACE SAMBU – carrying 2,000 metric tons of acrylonitrile – docked without incident on Sept 8 at Yangkou Port's Yangguang Island.
Yangkou Port is located in Rudong county in Nantong city, in East China's Jiangsu province and the MT ACE SAMBU was the 500th acrylonitrile tanker to dock there since 2015. The facility has handled 1.27 million tons of chemicals over the past seven years.
Acrylonitrile is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor, that is prone to burn when exposed to high heat or fire and can emit toxic gas. It is a basic and important raw material for synthetic fibers, synthetic rubber and plastics – and can be used to produce face masks, gloves and other epidemic prevention and control materials.
According to officials, the tanker's arrival marked a new milestone in the process of building up Yangguang Island as a preeminent energy and chemicals distribution hub.
