A new type of cooperative farm has in recent years been introduced to Matang town in Rudong county – administered by the city of Nantong in East China's Jiangsu province – which promises a bright future for the region.

The new model of cooperative farm has adopted an innovative management mode, where professionally trained managers are employed to run the agrarian ventures with the owners of the farms.

Under the model, the farms obtain certificates and licenses and establish special internal management protocols – signing contracts with the farmers who transfer over their land as shares, entering into employment contracts with the professionals, as well as cooperative operation agreements with the participating farmers.

The Madong professional grain planting cooperative is the first new cooperative farm founded in Matang town and is one of the first batch of Rudong's new cooperative farms. The farm has around 38 hectares, in an agrarian unit created by the ownership transfer of 198 resident farming households. It carries out production and operations through a shareholding system where farmers become shareholders by providing land or cash.

Focusing on scientific methodologies, this new type of cooperative farm has reportedly been instrumental in increasing the all-important yields of the farm.

In 2020, the farm achieved total grain output of nearly 740,000 kilograms and reported a net income of about 531,200 yuan ($81,314).

Its achievements have reportedly provided useful insights into the construction of other new cooperative farms, that are proving to be conducive to promoting the high-quality development of modern agriculture and the creation of a beautiful rural environment.
