Tongzhou enhances waste management with new facilities
Tongzhou district in Nantong, Jiangsu province, has made significant strides in improving waste management over recent years, investing over 100 million yuan ($14.11 million) in upgrading sanitation infrastructure and expanding waste classification efforts.
Since 2019, the district has undertaken the construction or upgraded four waste transfer stations, with a primary emphasis on enhancing operational efficiency via the implementation of advanced water treatment systems, modern compression equipment, and ground waterproofing measures. These improvements have resulted in a significant increase in both capacity and environmental compliance standards across these facilities.
One key facility, the urban sanitation service center, built in 2012, was initially designed to handle 300 metric tons of waste daily for both the urban area and the Erjia town. However, the burgeoning volume of waste led to frequent operational disruptions as a result of the aging equipment, thereby compelling the center to operate beyond its intended capacity.
In response to these issues, Tongzhou allocated 23 million yuan in August last year to undertake remedial and upgrading measures at the center. With new compression equipment and an advanced wastewater treatment system, the facility’s capacity has now increased to 400 tons per day. The newly renovated center became fully operational in March of this year, offering improved efficiency and cleanliness.
In addition to these upgrades, Tongzhou has also introduced a smart recycling project. This includes the establishment of a 7,000-square-meter sorting center in Huajiadu village for the purpose of segregating recyclable materials.
Furthermore, 139 smart recycling machines have been installed in 91 residential communities throughout the urban area.
Since 2022, the district has recycled 3,425 tons of materials, showing a strong commitment to sustainable waste management practices.
