Chen Yao, a master of traditional Chinese paper-cutting from Rugao, Jiangsu province, brought the artistry of this centuries-old craft to an international audience at the recent 8th APEC Human Resources Development Ministerial Meeting in Nanjing.

Invited to showcase his work at an international seminar on employment for people with disabilities, Chen shared stories of perseverance and craftsmanship with guests from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Chen's booth drew a steady stream of visitors, captivated by his vibrant red paper-cuttings, intricate designs and auspicious motifs. As he introduced his works, he explained the traditions behind the craft, the creative techniques involved and the cultural meanings woven into each design.

The highlight was Chen's live silhouette-cutting demonstration. With just a few swift, fluid snips of his scissors, he captured the distinctive features and expressions of his subjects with remarkable precision. Impressed by his skill, guests lined up for the chance to have their own silhouettes created by the artist.

The exhibition also featured more than 10 traditional craft forms distinctive to Jiangsu, including pottery, rubbing art, textile crafts, porcelain art, intertwined floral designs and velvet flower making.
