A high-tech enterprise based in Rugao, Nantong, is helping more people explore the universe through innovative telescope products and astronomy education programs.

Founded in 2011, Nantong Schmidt Opto-Electrical Technology specializes in the design, manufacture and sale of mid- to high-end astronomical telescopes. It produces telescopes for globally renowned brands such as Celestron, Sky-Watcher and ACUTER.

Its products are widely used in astronomical research, science education and public outreach. Some of its high-end telescope models have supported observation work conducted by the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, while others have been used in Earth observation missions aboard the NASA International Space Station.

"We are not only telescope manufacturers but also promoters of astronomy education," said Sun Yufeng, general manager of the company.

In May 2025, the company launched a 100-millimeter solar telescope designed for observing solar prominences, flares and other solar activities during daylight hours. The product enables students to conduct direct solar observations in the daytime.

In addition to product innovation, the company has spent several years developing astronomy teaching kits and supporting curricula tailored for classroom use. Since April 2023, these educational programs have been adopted at both primary and secondary schools in Nantong and other cities.
