Every April, large flocks of shorebirds fly north along China's eastern coastline. Qidong, located on the north bank of the Yangtze River's estuary, offers vast mudflats and wetlands that serve as an important stopover for these migrating birds.

Thanks to its healthy ecosystem, Qidong has long been a bird paradise. Historically, 348 bird species have been recorded in the area, highlighting its strong biodiversity.

As Qidong's environment continues to improve, its bird community keeps expanding. The Jiangsu Nantong Qidong Yangtze Estuary (North Branch) Wetland Provincial Nature Reserve recorded 149 bird species in 2024, up from 145 species in 2002 — a modest but meaningful increase reflecting over two decades of conservation efforts.

Rare species are appearing more frequently in Qidong. These include seven national first-class protected species and 22 national second-class species.

During spring migration, shorebirds such as dunlins and bar-tailed godwits are the most common. Today, Jianghai Lanwan Tourist Resort, Yuantuojiao Resort, and Qilong Town in Qidong have become popular spots for birdwatchers.
