The winter fishing festival at Longyou Lake, Rugao, kicked off on Feb 8, as nets were hauled in, heavy with shimmering silver fish, signaling a bountiful start to the new year.
Splashes filled the air as fishermen hauled their prized catch ashore, inspiring cheers from the crowd by the lake. The day's highlight was a 1.2-meter-long carp weighing 17 kilograms. Later, several large fish weighing between 15 and 25 kilograms were displayed and auctioned, enhancing the festive mood.

Onshore, a bustling market offered visitors a feast for the senses. Small pots simmered with freshly made fish soup, its milky broth gently bubbling in the winter air. Vendors prepared fish balls on the spot, their springy texture and rich flavor winning instant praise from eager tasters.
In addition to food, the event offered various cultural attractions. Stalls showcasing intangible cultural heritage, New Year goods markets, and creative handicraft booths were set up along the lakeside. Lion dances and vibrant song-and-dance performances kept the crowd entertained, while a dazzling car show on the lake added a modern touch. Calligraphers wrote Spring Festival couplets on site, with puppet shows and traditional cormorant fishing demonstrations also available.
