A Chinese juniper in Shuihui Garden, Rugao, dating back a millennium, exemplifies the area's rich horticultural history. It stands 7 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 28.1 centimeters and is a prime example of Rugao-style bonsai art. Records show it was planted in 1015.

The ancient juniper has a smooth, glossy trunk with a deep groove extending from its base to the top. It is adorned with hundreds of delicate branches, creating a miniature forest scene. Its shape is characterized by graceful curves, a striking stance, and an aura of resilience and timeless beauty.

Shuihui Garden, situated in the northeastern corner of Rucheng town, was first constructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Rugao, which falls under Nantong's jurisdiction, is famous for its ancient and historic trees. The city boasts five trees that are over a thousand years old, including ginkgo, Chinese scholar trees, and junipers.

In recent years, Rugao has developed tailored conservation strategies for every ancient tree, emphasizing better growth conditions, pest management, and restoration actions like trunk filling and reinforcement. These continuous efforts seek to boost protection effectiveness and safeguard these living fossils for future generations.
