Everbright Bioenergy Rugao was recently selected by China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment as part of the fifth group of nationally recognized environmental protection and waste treatment facilities, thanks to its outstanding contributions to green energy science education.
As the first biomass power generation project of China Everbright Environment Group in Nantong, the Rugao facility represents a major step forward in integrating rural vitalization with sustainable development.
With a total investment of 320 million yuan ($44.17 million), the plant can process 280,000 metric tons of agricultural and forestry waste annually, generating 210 million kWh of green electricity—enough to meet the yearly demand of 200,000 households.
It reduces carbon emissions by 216,000 tons and standard coal consumption by 84,000 tons each year. Its emissions are also more than 40 percent lower than local standards in Jiangsu province.
Since its launch in 2017, Everbright Bioenergy Rugao has become a green classroom for the public. The project has hosted over 5,000 visitors and organized more than 400 educational activities, reaching more than 300 surrounding villages, schools, and local organizations.
The company plans to expand its science education efforts through livestreams and dedicated sessions for farmers. These initiatives aim to help raw material suppliers better understand the biomass energy value chain and bring green knowledge to a broader audience.
