Rugao, Nantong, Jiangsu province has been actively promoting the construction of ecological rivers in recent years, significantly improving the local water environment.

One example is the transformation of the Tuanjie River in Yuhua village, Chengnan sub-district. Stretching 3.47 kilometers, the river underwent a major upgrade in 2023, including dredging, embankment reinforcement, slope greening, and renovating surrounding structures. As a result, the water environment along the Tuanjie River has seen remarkable improvement.

By implementing ecological river projects, Rugao has effectively improved the quality of rural water and ecosystems while beautifying the landscape.

The clear, flowing waters have enhanced the ecological attractiveness of the region while simultaneously creating new development opportunities. In Jiang'an, local authorities have entered into contracts for both riverbanks, benefiting the nearby residents. The villagers have collectively invested in fish fry, mondo grass, flowers, and other plant species and signed management commitment agreements. Under this model, contracted managers are tasked with conducting daily patrols, maintaining the landscaping, and overseeing sales activities. At the end of the year, profits are distributed between the managers and residents based on an agreed ratio.

Rugao's experience shows how ecological improvements can bring environmental and economic benefits to rural areas.
