Haimen makes strides in improving residents' incomes
The per capita disposable income of rural residents in Haimen district, Nantong, Jiangsu province in the first three quarters of 2023 was 27,435 yuan ($3,842.85), a year-on-year increase of 6.6 percent, according to official statistics.
This was largely due to the implementation of a series of measures rolled out by authorities, including developing signature industries, creating jobs for locals, and holding training sessions.
For example, Touqiao village has tapped into its high-quality soil and suitable climate to develop strawberry planting. It introduced fine varieties and adopted advanced technologies such as promoting integrated water and fertilizer management, mechanized operations, bee pollination, and green pest and disease control to achieve an average yield per acre of 22,500 yuan.
The district is currently home to 20,000 mu (1,333.33 hectares) of strawberry plantation and can generate an annual output value of 450 million yuan.
Haimen has also taken advantage of its natural conditions to develop goat and watermelon industries.
Toujia village has been making efforts to develop its labor economy to provide jobs to meet surplus labor requirements, and Huang Ruixiang, a resident of the village is one of the beneficiaries.
Huang said that his work is to clear rivers and he can earn more than 40,000 yuan from the job a year.
The current employment rate of rural labor in Haimen is over 95 percent.
In addition, the local government has released stimuli to encourage farmers with expertise to give lessons on agricultural production and farm management, and the training has been provided to more than 40,000 farmers.
