Haimen-based expedition rescuer saves lives in Antarctic mission
Xiao Jinfeng, a key figure aboard the Xue Long 2, played a pivotal role in rescuing a distressed ship and its four crew members near Papua New Guinea.
Having lived in Haimen district with family for years, Xiao is not just an experienced mariner but also a dedicated teacher at Jiangsu Shipping College.
As the Xue Long 2 traversed the equator during its 40th Antarctic mission, Xiao noticed a drifting boat in dire need. Coordinating with local authorities through various channels, including email and satellite phones, Xiao and his team successfully transferred the distressed crew to the safety of the Xue Long 2.

Despite initial setbacks, such as an engine malfunction on the rescued vessel, Xiao's coordination efforts with local rescue teams ensured a safe resolution. The entire operation, spanning approximately 33 hours, showcased the maritime prowess and commitment of China's expedition team.
Beyond his maritime achievements, Xiao, born in Anhui, has excelled in education, earning accolades for his contributions. His son, Xiao Zhirui, a high school student learning in Haimen, expressed immense pride in his father's role in saving lives.
Xiao, reflecting on the successful mission, emphasized China's capabilities in maritime endeavors. With an unwavering commitment to his profession, he envisions contributing further to the nation's maritime strategy.
