Dayu town in Rudong county, Nantong, Jiangsu province, was recently included in the first batch of national top agricultural industry towns, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Finance.

The town is an agricultural hub in the county that specializes in the production of green vegetables, with a primary focus on broccoli.

Dayu maintains a year-round cultivation area of 188,000 mu (12533.33 hectares) for vegetables and melons, among which kale covers an area of 62,500 mu. The average yield of kale is 3,800 yuan ($523) per mu. The entire industrial chain for this leading sector generates an annual output value of 425 million yuan.

The town has taken significant strides in implementing standardized production procedures at its broccoli base, ensuring traceability throughout the entire process. In 2020, 31,000-mu of land for broccoli was recognized as a provincial green and high-quality base.

About 40 percent of processed and frozen kale is exported, while vegetable and melon products are primarily processed and sold in large domestic wholesale markets and supermarkets.
