Haimen district in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, has been ramping up efforts to improve elderly care services over the past few years, earning the district provincial recognition, the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government recently announced.
Six districts in the province received the honor.
As of the end of 2022, the district was home to 65 elderly care service providers offering 10,386 nursing care beds.
The remarkable achievements were largely due to the implementation of a raft of measures rolled out by authorities, including introducing experienced nursing operating agencies, increasing government investment, and providing subsidies to poverty-stricken elderly people.
The district has invested more than 90 million yuan ($12.35 million) to build nursing homes in its rural areas since 2016 and provided subsidies worth 57 million yuan since 2020.
Authorities have also employed more than 180 nurses to provide onsite services to elderly individuals aged above 80 years old.
Cong Jianjun, head of the district's civil affairs bureau, said that authorities will continue efforts to build a better elderly care service system.
