Rare birds spotted in Rudong
Jia Taogen, a news worker interested in bird photography, captured footage of spotted redshanks in the Donghu Lake reservoir in Rudong, a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu Province, during the recently concluded May Day holiday.
The spotted redshank is an endangered species listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2012 Red List.
Located in a typical transition zone between sea and land, Donghu Lake consists of islands, green space, tidal flats, and ocean. Its 5.8-square-kilometer water area accounts for 70 percent of the total area, making it an ideal habitat for various bird species.
Rudong, with over a million hectares of natural wetland, is an important habitat on the East Asia-Australasia flyway for migratory birds.
Earlier this year, a bird monitoring survey conducted by local authorities recorded 1,245 rare and endangered bird species, including the nationally protected Chinese black-headed gull.
In addition, rare species such as the smew and white-eyed pochard were spotted this year for the first time.
