Hai'an family farm chosen as national model for cultivation
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on Nov 15 announced a third group of 47 family farms that will be models for scientific faming, as well as for strengthening agricultural production capacity, improving operations and management and promoting the integrated development of rural industries.
Yuwan Family Farm, located in Lianhe village, Longzheng sub-district in Hai'an – a county-level city administered by Nantong in East China's Jiangsu province – made it onto the latest list for scientific farming.
Established in August 2013, the farm covers about 109 hectares, given over to cultivating wheat and rice and it is also engaged in the processing and marketing of rice. In 2020, the farm produced 1,810 tons of grain and sold 120 tons of rice, generating output value of 5 million yuan ($782,742) and revenue of over 1.2 million yuan.
Yuwan Family Farm has been following green prevention and control cultivation concepts – which are dominated by agricultural, physical and biological prevention methods and supplemented by the use of chemicals.
To reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, more than half of the farm is fertilized with biogas slurry instead. Compared with ordinary farms, 187.5 kilograms of chemical fertilizers can be saved per hectare, saving about 450 yuan in chemical fertilizer costs, as well as yielding both economic and ecological benefits.
