Students from the School of Transportation and Civil Engineering of Nantong University recently visited the Shenshou Art Museum of China to experience the unique charm of Shen's embroidery.
Located next to the beautiful Haohe River in Chongchuan district, Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province, the museum was named after the renowned embroidery expert Shen Shou (1874-1921) from Suzhou.
Shen served as headmaster and teacher at China's first embroidery school, which was founded in Nantong in 1914 by Zhang Jian, a famous modern local industrialist and renowned academic.
Shen then developed her own embroidery style, which was named Shen Xiu (Shen's embroidery) by later generations.
With guidance from Bu Yuan, head of the art museum, the NTU students were amazed by a number of exquisite works.
The students even got to try their hands at simple embroidery techniques. Though a little difficult, they found the experience enjoyable.
