The covering over and greening project for the Nantong waste treatment center's landfill areas was completed recently, according to the Nantong urban management bureau.
Covering 320,000 square meters and located in Nantong city in East China's Jiangsu province – it is the largest landfill greening project located on the plains of the Yangtze River in China.
Located in Changjiang town in the county-level city of Rugao, administered by Nantong, the now magnificent green space was once the only domestic waste landfill site in Nantong before 2019, absorbing huge amounts of domestic garbage.
It formerly had to accommodate domestic waste output in the city which increased year by year, coupled with continuously demanding requirements for the operations of domestic waste landfills and changes in the functions of landfill. The site was used for more than 20 years, gradually exposing its deficiencies and problems.
Since the rejuvenation work started in 2019, the sealing of six landfill reservoirs and the transformation of leachate treatment stations and wastewater pipelines have been completed one after another.
The result has been achieving rain-sewage separation in the landfill reservoirs and other major gains, which have seen a dramatic turnaround in the formerly damaged area.
It is understood that with the completion and acceptance of the project, the next move will be to turn the area into an ecological theme park.
