The vast hinterland of Gangzha district has been developed in a comprehensive manner. The three elevated roads, Jianghai Road, Tongning Road and Changjiang North Road, are open to traffic, facilitating the district's role in the transportation system of the main urban zone. Eight bridges have been built on Tonglv Canal and the status as the main urban zone has been further consolidated. In recent years, Gangzha district, making full use of transportation resources, has launched a logistics park on the north of the railway station and advanced the development of the modern urban logistics base. Relying on the unique resource endowment of being close to rivers, seas and Shanghai and the regional advantage of integrated and connected transportation networks including waterways, highways and air transportation, Gangzha district has been moving forward by leaps and bounds. It has become the bridge head link to Shanghai and with the completion of the Su-Tong Yangtze River Highway Bridge and on-going construction of the Shanghai-Nantong Railway is influencing the middle and south of Jiangsu province.

Gangzha district is one of the birthplaces of national industry in Modern China. A hundred years ago, Zhang Jian sailed from here, carrying his dream of building a strong industrial country. He established a number of enterprises, including Dasheng Spinning Factory, Guangsheng Oil-pressing Plant, Fuxin Flour Mill and Zisheng Smelting Plant, shaping the industrial area of Tangzha town. Taking the grease plant and other early industrial enterprises as the main body, the 1895 Nantong Cultural and Creative Park, on the basis of reserving the features and styles of those years, has introduced a series of public service functions, including exposition, tourism and recreation to revitalize the historic industrial town and bring forth the new through the old.

Gangzha district has had a number of "firsts" in Jiangsu province and even in China. The first textile factory in Modern China - Dasheng Spinning Factory - was established in 1895; the first stock in China emerged here in 1879; the first highway of Jiangsu province, Gangzha Highway, started from here in 1906 and the province's first electric lamp was lit in the district.
