Plum, magnolia, peach, and camellia flowers are currently in full bloom at Nantong Museum.

Known as the first museum founded by Chinese people, the site was initially planned as a public botanical garden by its founder Zhang Jian, an industrial magnate and scholar in modern China.

Zhang and the museum's first curator Sun Yue collected a wide range of plants by picking varieties up in wild fields, purchasing plants, and receiving donations.

"The museum is currently home to more than 300 species of plants, including some with medical and edible use," said Ju Weidong, a local plant expert.

The floral scenery is part of the local government's efforts to enhance the living environment in the downtown area.

A number of green belts have been built along trunk roads, offering a great space for local residents to relax and exercise.
