Liusheng village in Rugao, Nantong has ushered in the harvest season for radish.
More than 40 hectares of radish plantation is expected to produce over 900 tons of radish, generating more than 200,000 yuan in revenue.
During this busy season, many villagers, especially housewives and elderly people, help with the picking, packing, and processing of radish. Such jobs can pay about 150 yuan ($21.74) per day.
Rugao, hailed as a city of longevity in China, has been planting radish for more than 1,000 years.
Due to the area's favorable climate and soil, Rugao radish is considered the tastiest in China and has been named a national geographical indication protection product. The pickled Rugao radish is sold around the world.
In addition, the radish is a popular ingredient in local dishes, especially in winter. As an old Chinese saying goes, "If you eat radish in winter and ginger in summer, there is no need to see a doctor."
