Rugao vegetable leave for Arctic expedition
A truck carrying with 50 boxes of Heitacai, a unique species of Chinese cabbage in Rugao county, Nantong left the base in the county and arrived at China's domestic polar expedition base in Shanghai on July 8.
These vegetable are planned to be sent to the Arctic with Xuelong 2, China's first domestically built polar icebreaker for a new round of scientific expeditions.
Heitacai, which are easy to preserve and taste good, will be used to provide scientists with a healthy supply of green vegetables.
"Fresh water on board is very precious, frozen Heitacai requires very little water to cook, making it the perfect choice for expeditions," said Zhang Beichen, deputy director of Polor Research Institute of China.
He also mentioned that the researchers come from all over the country, and that polar scientific research is an international endeavor. In the future, Heitacai will be actively promoted around the country and even abroad.
Zhonggao Agricultural Products Co, a Rugao-based agricultural company sealed an agreement with Polor Research Institute of China on May 29 this year to provide scientific staff during the expedition with Heitacai.
According to Zhang Bailin, vice-mayor of Rugao, more and more agricultural products in Rugao will be sent to polar regions on Xuelong 2 for ocean expedition.
