Rugao's first garbage sorting theme park unveiled

Updated: 2019-09-25

A garbage sorting theme park has recently opened in Rugao, a county-level city in Nantong, East China's Jiangsu province.

The park was built at the location of the former New Century Square. Some facilities themed around garbage sorting and some additional decorations were added to the area.

Multi-colored cartoon characters have been placed around the park to represent Rugao's four categories of waste, with a red character representing harmful waste, a blue character representing recyclable waste, a green character representing kitchen waste, and a gray character representing other waste.

Decorations in the park consist of recycled waste such as junked tires, which have proved popular among children.

The park is meant to teach people about garbage sorting and increase enthusiasm for the initiative, according to officials from the city's urban management department.

Participation in garbage sorting has improved over the past two years, with sorting facilities now being available in 61.09 percent of the city's communities, compared with 26.69 percent in 2017. Sixty-nine communities and 86 institutions in the main urban area have begun sorting their garbage, and more towns and villages are beginning to follow suit, said the officials.
