Various flood measures taken against heavier rainfall in Chongchuan
Various flood-prevention measures have been taken in Chongchuan district, Nantong in answer to the Level III flood-control emergency response started on July 13 as rainfall exceeded the historical seasonal average.
A flood-control office was set up combining services of the district's fire department, the urban management bureau and other units, implementing a 24-hour duty system in case of rainstorms or other emergencies.

Thirteen units along the Yangtze River including those of Langshan Street and Rengang Street and Riverside Park cooperated to patrol river dikes all day long to cope with the rising water level affected by the river's first flood of 2020.
The Chongchuan government has carried out 36 projects in places subject to severe waterlogging since 2016 and dredged and maintained pipe networks in 92 old residential areas and 215 branch roads of the whole district, effectively alleviating problems of water flow over the whole area.
Forty-two culverts and sluices have been made intelligent since 2019 and the others will be updated by the end of 2020, which will enable both remote dispatching and accurate control.
Forty-five natural flowing-water projects were fully implemented in 2019, allowing control of flowing water in 66 square kilometres of the central urban area; and 23 channel improvement projects will be carried out this year in the areas of Guanyin Mountain and Langshan Mountain, which will realize control over 100 sq km of moving water across the whole district.
Sponges have been used in construction of resettlement houses, municipal roads and small parks to effectively prevent waterlogging by absorbing and storing rainwater; they also relieve residents from worrying about wet shoes when playing in parks.
