As autumn draws to a close, the lingering fragrance of osmanthus flowers offers a seasonal treat for residents and visitors in Nantong, Jiangsu province. From scenic walks and fragrant tea to traditional pastries and sweet dumplings, the city invites people to experience the season's flavors and atmosphere.

At Wangjiang Teahouse, halfway up Langshan Mountain, osmanthus black tea combines the flower's delicate sweetness with the rich flavor of black tea. With its clear, golden-brown liquor and lingering floral aroma, the tea offers a relaxing pause amid the surrounding hills, greenery and views of the Yangtze River.

Osmanthus also adds a seasonal touch to some of Nantong's most appealing urban landscapes. At Seyuan Garden, clusters of flowering trees line winding paths, while Haoxi Library, a waterside cultural space beside the Haohe River, offers a peaceful setting for reading and enjoying the autumn air. At City God Temple, golden blossoms stand out against traditional red walls and dark roof tiles, creating a striking contrast between floral beauty and historic architecture.

Elsewhere, osmanthus trees scattered along park paths bring unexpected moments of fragrance to morning walks, strolls and outdoor picnics.

For many locals, however, autumn would not be complete without a taste of osmanthus rice cake. A traditional Nantong specialty, osmanthus rice cake sold at Siyi Pastry Store is made using traditional handmade techniques and seasonal flowers sourced from Nantong and Suzhou. Its soft, delicate texture, sweet red bean filling and subtle floral notes create a balanced flavor that is rich without being overpowering.

Hot osmanthus-filled sweet rice dumplings offer another comforting seasonal treat, bringing warmth on cooler autumn days.

In Nantong, the season's floral fragrance extends beyond gardens and mountain trails, finding its way into local tea houses, traditional sweets and everyday life.
