As the dog days of summer set in with relentless heat and humidity throughout August, the residents of Nantong know exactly where to find relief: the sprawling pear orchards.

From early July to mid-August, the countryside of Nantong transforms into a paradise of crisp, juicy pears, with four distinct varieties ripening in succession.

The season kicks off in early July with Sucui No 1, an early-maturing hybrid. This pear features pale green skin that is nearly blemish-free, and its flesh is tender, crisp, and remarkably juicy, accompanied by a subtle aroma of fresh grass.

By late July, the Cuiguan pear makes its appearance. A nostalgic favorite among Nantong residents, this variety offers a softer, creamier texture and bursts with juice, making it the perfect antidote to summer sluggishness.

The Xinyu pear arrives between late July and early August. With light brown skin and a round, substantial shape, it boasts exceptionally sweet, crisp white flesh that is best enjoyed fresh from the tree.

Rounding out the season is Sucui No 4, which ripens in mid-August. Larger than its early-season counterpart, this variety delivers a refreshing, lingering sweetness that extends the orchard's summer bounty into the latter half of the season.

Beyond their refreshing taste, pears have long been valued in Chinese culinary tradition for their cooling properties. During the sweltering summer months, when excessive sweating and prolonged air conditioning can leave people with dry throats and irritability, pears offer a natural remedy.

As the summer heat continues, Nantong's pear orchards offer more than just fruit — they provide a delightful escape. Through July and August, visitors are welcome to wander through the green canopy, pick their own pears, and savor the season's sweetness straight from the source.
