The 2026 Nantong Invitational Exhibition of Renowned Calligraphy and Painting Artists' Works for the Chinese New Year was launched at the Nantong Municipal Administrative Center on Feb 24.
The exhibition features the recent masterpieces of over 80 artists from Nantong, showcasing the city's new achievements and vitality in its economic and social development.
The centerpiece is a 40-meter-long grand scroll titled Elegance of the River and Sea. This work is a collaborative effort by 10 full-time calligraphy and painting artists from the Nantong Calligraphy and Traditional Chinese Painting Research Institute. From field trips to meticulous creation, it took two months of continuous work and dedicated refinement.
The scroll features the Yangtze River and the Yellow Sea as its theme, capturing the majestic Five Mountains and the Haohe River. It traces the industrial heritage of Tangzha Ancient Town, portrays the poetic essence of Shuihui Garden, includes the warmth of the Nantong Forest Safari Park, and preserves the cultural charm of the ancient town of Bencha.
"The work highlights the beauty and grandeur of the river and sea, as well as the subtle and profound nature of Jianghai Culture," said artist Shi Zuoxiong after viewing the exhibition. He participated with his new piece, Galloping Horse, which follows the brushwork style of Xu Beihong (1895-1953), a pioneer of modern Chinese painting, depicting a spirited galloping steed.
