A public cultural art space dedicated to Nantong shadow puppetry recently opened in Chongchuan district, blending tradition with modernity to offer diverse cultural experiences for residents. 

The exterior walls of the experience center are decorated with cultural symbols unique to Nantong, such as shadow puppetry and blue calico prints. Inside, the space exhibits a variety of creative products — from humanoid puppets, zodiac-themed photo frames, and puppet-inspired earrings. The performance area features a puppet theater where visitors can not only enjoy shows, but also participate in hands-on puppet making. 

As one of China's earliest forms of theatrical art, shadow puppetry has a history of over 2,200 years. Nantong shadow puppetry was brought to Nantong during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) by merchants from Sichuan province and combines singing styles from various theatrical genres. The props are crafted from high-quality local cowhide and colored with natural mineral pigments, which keeps them vibrant and visually striking. 

Besides its emphasis on shadow puppetry, the experience space features popular craft activities like pottery and lacquer fan painting. "We aim to draw more visitors, especially young people and children, to engage with and learn about Nantong shadow puppetry," said Wang Hongyu, the space's director. 

While following traditional shadow puppetry techniques, the space also integrates modern technology. The team has developed a "computer vision artificial intelligence-generated content technology" for motion capture in shadow puppet shows, which is now in testing. 

"This technology enables on-screen puppets to mimic human movements in real time," Wang Hongyu said. "Visitors will soon be able to try this immersive innovation in the experience space."
