The Siena College of Future Biotechnology at Nantong University was inaugurated at the Seyuan Campus on Sept 10.
The institute stands as the first Sino-Italian joint educational institution in Jiangsu province, established with the approval of China's Ministry of Education.
Beginning this academic year, undergraduate programs in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Biotechnology, and Automation will be introduced, adopting an innovative "4+0" educational model. This model allows students to complete their degree entirely in China while being jointly registered at both NTU and the University of Siena. Graduates who fulfil all academic requirements will be awarded degrees recognized by both universities.
Xu Yiming, dean of the college, said it will combine academic strengths of both countries to support and foster industry development in the Yangtze River Delta region by focusing on intelligent manufacturing in smart equipment and environmentally friendly pharmaceuticals in biopharmaceuticals.
Tiziana D'Angelo, consul general of Italy in Shanghai, highlighted Italy's long-standing ties with Nantong in trade and investment. She expressed optimism that the collaboration between Siena and Nantong would grow to include more sectors, creating mutually beneficial opportunities.
Chen Dongmei, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Nantong Municipal Committee, called for greater collaboration with Siena in education, culture, and industry at the ceremony.
