Four ancient ginkgo trees in Hai'an, Nantong, Jiangsu province, each more than 500 years old, have been included in the province's 2025 Ancient and Famous Trees Restoration Program. This new round of conservation work is scheduled to begin this autumn, after the weather cools down.

Hai'an currently has 34 registered ancient and famous trees, categorized into three national grades: six first-class trees (all more than 500 years old), two second-class trees (300–499 years old), and 26 third-class trees (100–299 years old).

Ginkgoes account for the largest share, while other species include magnolia, hackberry, boxwood, and osmanthus. More than 70 percent of these trees grow in rural areas.

In recent years, Hai'an has strengthened efforts to safeguard its natural heritage. Authorities conduct regular inspections of ancient trees, install supports for those at risk of leaning or breakage, and implement emergency protection during severe weather. For trees affected by pests or disease, specialists apply treatments such as medication and targeted injections, successfully saving several endangered specimens.
