Tongzhou firm's product awarded geographic indication

Jiangsu Xinzhong Brewing Co based in Nantong's Tongzhou district has recently been granted the use of the "Tongzhou Fermented Bean Curd" geographic indication.

Tongzhou fermented bean curd is made primarily from soybeans, rice wine, and a variety of other ingredients such as rice, salt, sugar, red yeast rice, and sesame oil. The bean curd is processed through over 20 traditional production steps using original ingredients and methods, resulting in a product with a unique flavor profile after a specific fermentation period.

Known as the "eastern cheese", Tongzhou fermented bean curd contains high-quality proteins, lecithin, linoleic acid, and essential nutrients like calcium and iron.

The product has earned several prestigious accolades, including a gold medal at the China Food Expo and recognition as a Chinese Famous Brand Product. The brewing technique for Tongzhou's fermented bean curd, specifically the Xinzhong method from Shigang town, has also been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage of Jiangsu province. In June 2004, Tongzhou fermented bean curd received official approval as a Chinese Geographic Indication product.

A geographic indication acts like a product's "ID card", symbolizing its distinctive quality and regional characteristics. For producers, this indication helps enhance brand value, expand market reach, and strengthen competitiveness. For consumers, it offers a quick way to identify high-quality local specialties, reducing the cost and risk of making choices.
